This offbeat 1955 thriller combines elements of a western and film noir. A mysterious one-armed stranger gets off a passenger train in 1945 at a lonely desert town. The man claims to be searching for the father of a decorated Nisei soldier who was killed in Italy during WWII. The town locals, led by a villainous bully, are hiding a deadly secret and are willing to kill the stranger to keep it from being revealed. Spencer Tracy was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of the crusty, wounded officer who refuses to stop looking into the past of this dusty backwater whistle stop.
