In this 1961 WWII epic, Allied commandos infiltrate a German-held island in the Aegean Sea. Their seemingly impossible mission is to knock out huge cliff side cannons capable of destroying a British amphibious force sailing soon. The group is betrayed by a traitor. And their mission appears doomed unless the men use their wits and act quickly. This six-million dollar film starred Gregory Peck, David Niven and Anthony Quinn. It was based on the novel by Alistair MacClean, and directed by J. Lee Thompson. The screenplay was by Carl Foreman, one of Hollywood’s notorious blacklisted writers.
