“They call me Mister Tibbs!” That is the classic reply Sidney Poitier, as Det. Virgil Tibbs, snaps back at bigoted Sheriff Rod Stieger when the lawman asks him:“What do they call you, boy?” Tibbs was passing through a Mississippi town just as a rich industrialist was murdered. Stieger starts out thinking Tibbs, a black man, is a suspect, but ends up working with him to eventually crack the case. This 1967 film was selected Best Picture, and Rod Stieger named Best Actor for his role as the redneck lawman. A famous scene depicts an arrogant planter slapping Tibbs in the face, and getting slapped back.
